Once you’ve made contact with the gorilla family, you will have up to one hour to observe them from a safe distance of 7 meters. Be ready for the possibility of curious young gorillas or relaxed mothers closing this gap, as the trackers will guide you on how to interact safely and fully enjoy the experience.
Due to the strict limitations on the number of daily gorilla permits, especially during the peak seasons of June to September and January to February, it is highly recommended to plan your visit well in advance, ideally around a year before your intended travel date. THE FOUR GORILLA TRAILS AND SECTORS

Rushaga

Nkuringo
Nkuringo was opened in 2004, and is located in the remote southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, directly opposite Buhoma. This trailhead sits at an altitude of 2,100 meters on the Nteko Ridge, 600 meters above the Kashasha River valley where the Nkuringo gorilla group resides. This results in a steep descent at the start of the trek and a very strenuous climb back. Despite being the most challenging of the four trailheads, Nkuringo offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Virunga Volcanic Range and provides access to local farming communities, a Batwa experience, and the picturesque Lake Mutanda and Lake Bunyonyi.

GETTING TO BWINDI IMPENETRABLE NATIONAL PARK
Traveling to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park has become significantly more accessible in recent years. While historically the journey involved at least two long days of driving on challenging roads, modern travel options have streamlined the process considerably.
By Road
For those opting to drive, the trip from Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park typically takes over 10 hours on a good day. The road conditions can vary, but the drive offers a chance to experience the diverse landscapes of Uganda, transitioning from bustling cityscapes to serene rural areas. From the southern sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park (Ishasha), it takes about 2 hours to reach Bwindi. If you’re coming from Lake Mburo National Park, the drive is approximately 5-6 hours.
By Air
To save time, consider flying into one of the two airfields near Bwindi. Kihihi serves the northern part of Bwindi Forest, while Kisoro is the gateway to the southern region. Flights to these airfields typically last around 90 minutes and are scheduled daily, connecting with other destinations within Uganda. From the airfields, a short drive of about 1.5 hours will get you to your final destination within the park.
Cross-Border Travel
Another popular option is to drive from the southern part of Bwindi across the border into Rwanda. This route offers the opportunity to explore Rwanda or continue to Kigali for your flight home. The journey from Nkuringo in southern Bwindi to the Rwandan border takes about 2 hours, with an additional 3 hours to Kigali, depending on local conditions.
